a Self Improved Lifestyle
Hello again, here with another personalized post about self improvement. I myself, have only recently started this new lifestyle whereby I strive for constant growth and improvement. Realizing only recently that, it’s a game changer. Whether we look at some personal or professional statistics, chances are there is always people better, stronger, faster & more known to others than you might be. Competitively you are always at a disadvantage, and these numbers are ever increasing as the world gets more populated, fewer jobs gets listed, more people doing the same exact thing as you are found, competitors claiming larger markets due to higher budgets. This is why we no longer rely on what we know and what we are capable of. Chances are, you already know that. And that’s why I am writing a self improvement guide, rather than an -explanation.
"Self Improvement" - What is it?
Self improvement is the act of improving your mental or physical self on your own terms regardless of external expectations are requirements. It’s clear that a lot of people will only do what is expected of them, nothing more & sometimes even less. On a professional level, people like these are weighed and stamped as an un-scalable asset. Meaning no real return on investment can be connected to them. Not only are these types of people stagnating in their career but, they seem to be filled with this mindset throughout the rest of their personal life. Then they carry this mindset over to their next career, relationship, commitment. The people advancing, scaling up, these are the people that you can visually distinguish from the “just doing my part” type of people.
Why Self Improve?
First and foremost, the first person to ever benefit from self improvement, is you. As mentioned above, self improvement is for yourself, regardless of external expectations and requirements. We follow this lifestyle for our own benefit. Naturally it bleeds out to opportunity and better problem solving capabilities. Physical self improvement is important for health and happiness. We want to take care of our bodies. We want to know that we will live longer and be more lively in our olden age. To be more fit, will also benefit our work life, we will be able to stand longer, work harder, concentrate better. Mental Improvement helps is learn new skills, retain more information, it exercises our communication skills (having more things to talk about).
So here is my: Self Improvement Guide
I want to discuss some mental, emotional and psychological strategies that I personally use, I feel we all know what we can do regarding our physical state. Namely; exercise, better sleep etc. Click here to see how exercise and body improvement benefits you professionally. Click here to read about sleep. Firstly, lets talk about the approach, Self improvement is not a strategy you execute every few months or so. Rather, I believe it should be a lifestyle you follow every minute of everyday. So I am going to list the 3 best practices I follow and then explain, how in conjunction they help me excel in my field of interest.
Learning - Practice 01
Without a doubt, educating myself and learning new skills, traits and methods have been my biggest asset since I started Graphic and Content. I am completely self taught in all our service areas. I studied business for about two years, so i had a general idea of whats what but, that did not benefit me merely as much as all the hours i have spent on Google, YouTube, doing online courses, asking around for scraps of information. I did not always like, sitting down, reading up information buckling down and studying, It was only about two years in working with my dad in the painting industry when I realized that I have an immense thirst for knowledge. We wanted a website for our company and I remember telling my dad “I think i’d be able to do it, just give me some time”. It took a little longer than I would have wanted to but, I got there. Through Google and YouTube I have taught myself a new skill that I never guessed I needed. Everything sort-off escalated from there, branding, business cards, logo’s and marketing. Before I knew it, I owned about 30 online courses on udemy.com I had a huge list of channels on YouTube covering these subjects that i have subscribed to. My entire day consisted of working, learning, working, learning. So there you have it: Practice one – Teach yourself something new every time you get a chance, if you didn’t get a chance, then make one. YouTube and Google is free to use, and I guarantee you, you can learn what you want to learn for free. If you have some money, take some courses. Be that person that goes, “you know what, I am able to do it because i taught myself a bit”, or “yeah I can help, I have that course in my library”
Self Management - Practice 02
“You won’t be able to self improve, if you are unable to self manage” – I just said that (quoting this for future reference). So what do I mean by this? As the controller of your own mind, body and life, you are actively managing yourself on a daily basis. Angry for no reason? No time for exercise? Feeling sleepy and tired during day time? This sounds like poor management to me. That’s probably harsh but, so is life. Life will not give you time, happiness, health. You have to take those expectations off of life and place it on yourself. If you watch more than 1 hour of TV in a day, then you are not allowed to complain about lack of time. If you are consumed and incapacitated by emotion for longer than 10 minutes, then that’s on you. Self management is hard to master but, if you strive to improve it on a daily basis, then you are golden. Areas to apply Self Management
Contrary to popular belief, you have full control over this. The average adult sleeps for 7 hours a day & works for 8-9 hours day. This means, effectively you should have +-8 hours a day, all to yourself. Lets take 2 hours for housework and dinner. That 6 hours you have everyday. What are you doing for 6 hours a day? I take a bath instead of a shower every 3’rd day, so that I can listen to a podcast on social media marketing. I walk to the shop during lunch time, to clear my mind of any unnecessary thoughts and re-align them to my current objective (and pick up some necessitates for the house.) Instead of watching two episodes of Stranger Things, I watch one and use the other 50 minutes to finish my online course. While cleaning the house, i am brainstorming my next ad strategy. Take control of your time, there is no excuse you can use to sway me. Start breaking down your activities (all of them, I am even managing my potty time) and figure out where you can score.
Managing your emotion is no easy task but, I have personally found out that, emotions often get the better of us, and they directly influence everything around us. I know if I feel down/sad, my drive and focus shoots down quicker than a bullet. Managing emotions is obviously easier said than done however, I find: simply reminding yourself everyday to do so, will already set you on the right path. If you find yourself slacking in anything, take stock of your emotions. Try to figure out what happened and why. The very second my logical mind realizes my irrational emotions has been hijacking my workflow, I stop everything I do and assess. Doing so removes any power my emotions might have had and gives my logical mind a fighting chance. Keeping your emotions in check helps your professional objectives by removing irrational decisions. It also helps you grow a thicker skin, meaning you will manage negativity more efficiently (spoiler alert: there will always be negativity).
We are born with our own coded perspective, we are then raised and nurtured by our parents/guardians perspectives. Along the path of maturing, we then formulate decisions and take action based on this nature/nurture hybrid. No two persons will have the same thinking process regarding problems, scenarios, opportunities and threats. If we look at nurtured mentality, then we realize that; mindsets, perspectives, personalities and traits are all malleable (meaning they can be changed and adapted). Therefore, I am claiming it right here and now, you can manage your own perspective. By learning and managing your time and emotions, you can remove a singular perspective by replacing it with new ones. I recommend following a few well know personalities in your field of interest, and when faced with a problem, ask yourself what they would make of it. As you keep improving and educating yourself, managing your perspective(s) will become increasingly easier.
Patterns are regularities, meaning they have repeated themselves enough times to be measured as a pattern. A thinking pattern is a manner of thinking. We humans are creatures of habits, easily vulnerable to getting stuck in a pattern. The way (method) we think, is no exception. As creatures blessed with evolution, we have the power to identify patterns all around us, and within us. The way you think, ultimately depicts the way you feel, empathize, choose and dream. You must of heard the famous “glass is half full vs half empty” statement. They are actually just examples of a thinking pattern. When i mentioned changing your perspective above, I actually challenged you to change your thought pattern, however looking for a different perspective on a singular subject, is vastly different from changing they way you think. I want you to take a look at the video bellow explaining a few of these patterns and how they can weigh us down.
Self Auditing - Practice 03
Auditing oneself is a rather foreign concept, however we do so on a daily basis. The aim here is to get you to stop judging yourself but, rather to start learning everything about yourself. Find out what influences your choices, ask yourself what your strengths & weaknesses are. Identify your opportunities & threats. When auditing yourself, try to do so without emotion. Use all your new self management skills and actively track your self-improvement lifestyle. By doing so, you can clearly see what’s working and what is not. Where you should focus and what you should leave. Make this a monthly commitment and breakdown all your skills, knowledge & emotions. Look at them from different perspectives and evaluate your thinking pattern as you are doing it. Compare the data by looking at each month and really focus on your progress. If you have done this a few times then you would be able to pick up on changes on the fly. Next month when “Steve” says hi, you will identify your thinking pattern when communicating with him. When your sister calls you at an awkward time, you will be able to make an exception for her because, you are no longer being controlled by time. When you find yourself staring angrily at a screen, you would be able to identify why you are angry, giving power back to your logic on the fly. By the time you have mastered Self Auditing- you’d realize that practice one and two is happening at default without you really trying.
Your leaning new things, managing yourself more efficiently and your successfully auditing yourself regularly and adapting accordingly. This new lifestyle is so sought after, that people will visually notice a difference. Your employer will pick up on your new problem solving skills, your job interview will be more engaging and they love the fact that you have done an online course. Your family appreciates the time you have made for them. As a master of your own emotions and thoughts, you find yourself less agitated and actually more happy. This self-improvement guide should actually be start of your new lifestyle. It should be a checklist that you can follow until you yourself, will be able to share your own version of self-improvement. I believe that everyone has the ability to be their best self but, only they themselves has the power to become their best self.
